There’s something so magical about photographing a mama-to-be, especially when she comes to the session with a creative vision. This moody maternity session at Southern Love Studio in downtown Austin, Texas (a space that’s quickly becoming one of my favorites for indoor sessions) was so fun. It’s funky, versatile, and just right for getting a little creative with lighting and mood.

When my client mentioned wanting a dramatic spotlight photo—playing with light and shadow to emphasize her baby bump—I was instantly intrigued. I thought, “Okay, this will be fun and different.” What I didn’t expect? Just how obsessed I’d become with the final images.
We kept the setup simple: clean background, one strong light source, and her glowing presence front and center. The shadows wrapped around her bump so beautifully, adding depth, intimacy, and such a sense of anticipation to the shots. There’s something powerful about highlighting the shape of new life in such a raw and artistic way. The moodiness of the light made every image feel like a quiet celebration—bold, yet tender.
We also utilized other spaces in the studio, including a stunning stairwell with exposed brick and perfect natural light pouring in. She looked angelic there—bathed in warm light, a peaceful strength in her expression. That contrast between the dramatic spotlight and the gentle glow of the stairwell made for such a beautiful, well-rounded gallery.
This session was a reminder of how impactful a single idea can be. Her vision totally inspired me—and now? I’m doing this for all my sessions at Southern Love going forward.
